The two companies are so close to merging that they share the same trio of shareholders, following major restructurings.

NTL and Telewest were keen though to emphasise that the new services are not the beginnings of joint working, or preparations for a merger. The new service however does replace a joint venture between the two.

Front Row, the previous exercise offered films starting at staggered times. The new service moves beyond films though to hundreds of hours of free television programming.

Childrens TV and music jukebox are on offer. Content is provided by the BBC, Jetix, Nickelodeon and Warner Music amongst others.

The service will be provided by FilmFlex, a joint venture between Disney, Sony and the On Demand Group. Previously ODG had ran Front Row on its own.

The cost is between £30m and $40m for NTL and £20m for Telewest.

The move follows British Sky Broadcastings personal video recorder (PVR). However the PVR requires a special set top box such as it Sky Plus box.
