D-Ram memory chip manufacturer, Infineon has been fined $160m for taking part in a price-fixing ring. The case was brought by the US Department of Justice.

The German based company admitted meeting other manufacturers IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Compaq. Infineon has agreed to co-operate with the DoJ.

"This case sends the message that high-tech price-fixing cartels will not be tolerated." said John Ashcroft.

The fine at $160m is the third largest ever levied by the US anti-trustbusters. Three out of the four largest have been levied on German companies.

Like Amvescap, Infineon had to make provisions for settlement such as this one. In July the company put aside $260m for potential fines.

The actual fixing related to a few Original Equipment Manufacturers. Infineon has in touch with these companies to reach settlements.
