Over 2.4 million Americans have lodged their tax returns electronically using a "Free File" service offered by the Internal Revenue Service. The service was introduced to reassure the Public that it was safe to lodge their returns electronically. The IRS is hailing it a success
Last year over 25 million returns overall, or 35% were electronic and that has already been surpassed this year. The goal of the IRS is to reach 80% by 2007.
The service is not provided by the IRS itself but through an alliance with over 20 companies.IRS Link
The Free File Alliance is not managed directly by the IRS but by the Council for the Electronic Revenue Communication Advancement (CERCA). It should be noted that this service is not the same as e-filing.
Not everyone is eligible, indeed the IRS aim is for 60% to be able to use the service. Eligibility levels are set by the participating companies.
An additional element is to provide as many opportunities as possible for those people without computers to lodge electronically. These include working with old age and disabled groups.
