ISEB Testing Qualification

Web www.software-risk.co.uk

The Information Systems Examination Board (ISEB) Testing Qualification is becoming the de facto standard required in job adverts for testers. ISEB itself is part of the British Computer Society. The recently launched practitioner level should help to extend this control.

There are three levels in the ISEB hierarchy:- Foundation (which this author incidentally holds), Pracatitioner and Diploma.

The foundation certificate has the longest pedigree with thousands holding it. The target group is anyone with an interest in testing. Primarily testers, test analysts, test engineers and test managers. In addition project managers, quality managers and developers would also benefit from holding it.

Typically candidates would attend a training course prior to sitting the exam. (Three days should be ample.) The exam is multiple choice.

The next level up, Practitioner is for the more experienced tester or test manager. They need to be able to perform the whole range of testing activities.

The diploma certificate is for those with in-depth knowledge of a particular techniques such as automation or management. However at the current time a syllabus is not available for the diploma level.

As the basic qualification for testing the foundation certificate syllabus is the most straightforward. Covering Principles of Testing, models throughout the lifecycle, dynamic testing techniques, static testing, test management, tool support for testing.

A more diverse spread of subjects and others in more depth means that the Practitioner syllabus is much more stretching. Subjects covered include Test Process, test management, testing and risk, test techniques, reviews, incident management, test process improvement, test tools and people skills.

This stretching of the candidates would probably attract a greater number of managers and those with other qualifications.

Before the Practitioner certificate, a candidate must have the Foundation Certificate and eithere 18 months experience or completed and ISEB accredited practitioner training course.

Courses for the Practitioner Certificate are longer, typically eight days. Although some providers are splitting them into 2 day blocks.
