University College London Hospitals has implemented smart cards in conjunction with an electronic patient records system.

The NHS Foundation Trust is one of the first in the UK to use the combination in the inpatient environment.

IDX Systems, who supplied the system claim that smart cards provide and enhanced level of security. Only authorized personnel should have access to patient demographic and medical information.

Both the smart card system and the electronic patient record system (Carecast) are to be supplied by IDX Systems.
