Microsoft has announced that the next generation of Windows is to be released in late 2006. The name has also changed from Longhorn to Vista.

According to Redmond, the name Vista "captures the idea of clarity".

Vista will replace Windows XP.

A test version of Vista will start arriving in August.

Microsoft has put a lot of energy into the way information is handled in Windows for the new product. It competitors, Google in particular, have made inroads into the desktop arena with their own search engines.

A server version is due to be released in 2007.

Delays have ocurred to Longhorn/Vista because of Microsoft having to divert resources to fixing security holes in previous incarnations of Windows.
