Contactless payment using credit cards moved a step forward today, with technology from Gemplus.

The GemInstant PayPass solution has been launched by the smart card vendor.

A MasterCard credit card has a built-in chip and antenna which uses short range radio waves. Users simply have to tap their GemInstant PayPass card on to a specially equipped PayPass terminal to securely transmit details.

GemInstant has received full certification from MasterCard International.

Production of the cards will start at Gemplus's facility in Pennsylvania, in July 2005.

Ernie Berger, President of Gemplus North America, added, "Being among the first smart card providers to achieve full certification for MasterCard PayPass is a serious endorsement of the effort we've put into developing contactless solutions over the last decade."
