MarkMonitor Launches Industry’s First Comprehensive Solution to Protect Against Pharming Attacks

Integrated Suite of Solutions Combines Outsourced Enterprise DNS Solution with Global Domain Name Monitoring

San Francisco, June 16, 2005 - MarkMonitor, the leader in online Corporate Identity Management, announced today the launch of the industry's only comprehensive suite of services to monitor and protect companies against Pharming, and other domain name attacks.

Pharming is an online attack against a DNS system that is designed to enable a perpetrator to steal consumer credential and identity data by causing the DNS system to route the consumer to a fake web site rather than a real web site. This attack, known as DNS poisoning, is aimed at Authoritative DNS Servers and Enterprise or ISP Caching Servers, and causes a legitimate URL, such as a bank URL, to resolve to an IP address associated with a fake site.

Unlike Phishing, Pharming is not reliant upon users being lured to a site via eMail. Perpetrators of Pharming attacks wait for victims to type a known domain name into their browser. Although the correct domain is utilized, victims are presented with a site pointing to an IP address where a fraudulent site is hosted.

MarkMonitor's comprehensive approach to protecting

against Pharming consists of:

Global Domain Name Monitoring

MarkMonitor offers a patent-pending solution that monitors Name Servers for changes to live domain names on the Internet, including detecting split DNS tactics devised to avoid standard monitoring solutions. These changes may be the result of Pharming attacks, social engineering attacks designed to change registry entries or unintentional changes mistakenly submitted through the registrar of record. MarkMonitor's 24 x 7 operations center receives alerts, reports suspicious changes, and assists customers in quickly correcting the situation.

SPF-Enabled Enterprise DNS

Customers of MarkMonitor's Enterprise DNS can rest assured that their DNS servers are less vulnerable to DNS poisoning attacks, such as Pharming. MarkMonitor's Enterprise DNS supports new levels of security and authentication, such as SPF, which is fast becoming a requirement to identify legitimate email at the largest Internet Service Providers. Moreover, MarkMonitor provides an advanced user interface and tools to manage Enterprise DNS securely, accurately and consistently.

According to Ted Sergott, MarkMonitor SVP Engineering, "MarkMonitor's suite of DNS monitoring and security solutions provide the only comprehensive approach to preventing and detecting DNS based attacks, such as Pharming. In addition, Enterprise DNS goes well beyond prevention, and enables companies to quickly and accurately deploy DNS enabled authentication services, such as SPF, which assures ISPs that your outbound traffic is legitimate."
