The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) is designing a new benefits debt collection service. Independently of its normal investigations work, the Benefit Fraud Inspectorate (BFI) has issued a guidance report.

Subject of the report is improving complaint handling in the Debt Management Service.

"

Head of Debt Management commented:- ""The BFI report has come at an important time for Debt Management. We are about to implement a new IT system and have redesigned our business processes to improve our efficiency in the recovery of debts. ""We have developed an action plan to address the inconsistent handling of complaints and the quality of responses. I will ensure that our response to the report is both effective and deliverable.""

"

The DWP claims that less than 0.1% of the one million letters sent by the department generate complaints.
