The Benefit Fraud Inspectorate is to target authorities that either process HB claim slowly or insecurely.
The BFI has identified Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council,
Rugby Borough Council, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Havant
Borough Council, Highland Council and Cardiff Council as taking longer than 42 days to process new claims.
Councils that are perceived as possibly processing claims insecurely are:- Cannock Chase District
Council, Waverley Borough Council, Borough of Poole, West Devon Borough
Council, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, Mendip District Council and
Clackmannanshire Council.
The assessment of securely processing was based on the low number of sanctions or counter-fraud prosecutions imposed by the authorities.
The Minister responsible for HB, James Plaskitt said "I am pleased to announce that planned inspections of Malvern Hills District Council and Mansfield District Council will not now go ahead because these councils have shown significant improvements in their performance."
