Sun Microsystems and NEC have deepened their strategic alliance. Secure voice and data and middleware are to be developed jointly.

Since 2000, NEC has been a Sun re-seller and original equipment manufacturer Sun partner. NEC is to expand the Multimedia Information Platform, centred on Sun's operating system, Solaris.

NEC is also entering the global server consolidation market, with the alliance as a vehicle.

The secure voice aspect stems from combining IP telephony from NEC with ultra-thin client technology from Sun.

NEC wants to base its next generation customer relationship management solutions on this fusion.
