Symantec has been granted a patent on an important piece of anti-virus scanning technology.
The security firm has been using the technology for more than 5 years. Essentialy it allows only selected data felt to be threatened, such as e-mails.
Other and older anti-virus software concentrate on portions of data or scan the entire data body. Consequently, scanning became a slow and cumbersome process.
The slowness meant that responses to such as threats as self-mutating viruses and worms were hampered.
Chief architect, Carey Nachenberg commented, "Over the years, viruses, worms and spyware have evolved considerably, making detection by traditional anti-virus software increasingly difficult and time consuming".
"This invention fundamentally reduces the complexity of detecting malicious software and shortens the response time needed to address new threats, without the need for new product updates or patches."
