Lawyers for Bernie Ebbers have started the defence case in the WorldCom fraud trial.
The disgraced former CEO of WorldCom is accused of masterminding a massive corporate fraud, designed to hide the parlous state of the finances.
Scott Sullivan, former CFO of WorldCom has been the Governments star witness. His testimony alleged that Ebbers was linked directly to the fraud and had indeed help to orchestrate it. Sullivan has already pleaded guilty.
Opening gambit by the defence was a request to throw the case out. The reasoning was the prosecution had failed to establish that the accounting irregularities at the case centre was not fraud. Judge Jones rejected.
Star witness for the defence is likely to be whistleblower, Cynthia Cooper. Cooper had been an internal auditor at WorldCom, and had indeed disclosed to the world the wrongdoings.
