The US government is to develop a central database that will rate internet threats to national infrastructure. A host of Web titans are supporting the intitiative including Cisco, Symantec, Microsoft, Qualys and eBay.

Central is the concept of a common vulnerability scoring system. Under the auspices of the US National Infrastructure Council (NIAC), the database will be a step towards a global warning system.

Transportation, banking, energy and manufacturing are seen as the most at threat areas.

The NIAC comes under the Department of Homeland Security, set up in the wake of 9/11.
