A roster of single cor Pentioum 4 chips for desktop PCs has been announced by Intel. The company is ramping up for the introduction of its dual core products in the second half.
With the upgrades, Intel is catching up with AMD by putting 64-bit technology into the desktop.
Updates are to the Pentium Extreme Edition. These chips are aimed at power users and gamers. Volume business and consumer markets are targetted with the updated Pentium 4 6xx line.
Each line has some common features, 2mb of level two cache, Execute Disable Bit technology and are built on a 90 nanometre process. Front side bus is at 1066 MHz for the Extreme and 800MHz for the volume business.
Clock speeds are 3.73GHz for the Extreme. Volume users will have between 3GHz and 3.8GHz.
Enhanced power management has been includied in both ranges. The Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology aids power consumptions and heating/cooling.
The current line-up will last until the dual core products are launched. Then new chipsets are due to be introduced for the 6xx range.
